Active Puerto Rico: Beyond the Beaches

Sun, sea, and sand are not all Puerto Rico has to offer.  The island is packed with incredible adventures for those clients who want something more thrilling. These remarkable experiences are just a few examples of the activities you can book for your clients in Puerto Rico.

1. Zipline through a tropical forest

Exploring rainforests has reached new levels in Puerto Rico – literally. Seeing those towering trees from the ground is great, but a far better way to experience the lush vegetation here  involves speed and a harness attached to a metal cable strung between two platforms.

Ziplining in Puerto Rico offers a thrill like no other – your clients can hurtle at speeds of 95 miles per hour, whizzing past the forest canopy and spotting colorful birds flitting about among them. This island has the world’s second-longest zip line (The Monster in Toro Verde), as well as entire zipline trails that take guests on a tour of the rainforest.

2. Take surf lessons on azure oceans

Surrounded by ocean, it’s hardly surprising that Puerto Rico has watersports aplenty. There’s a lot to do out in the sea, from stand-up paddleboarding to scuba diving in colorful reefs. Your clients can sail, swim, snorkel, and kayak, but the best part of Puerto Rico’s coastline is its surf.

Rincón and Aguadilla are known worldwide for their fantastic waves. Both are great destinations to learn surfing as a novice or to catch some more challenging two-footers. The waters are warm year-round, making it an ideal place for beginners, there’s a distinct surfer vibe in lots of the coastal towns, offering a pleasingly laidback approach to life – perfect for a chilled vacation.

 3. Explore incredible caves

From high on mountaintops to under the forest floor, Puerto Rico’s geography makes for exciting exploration. Cueva Ventana, one of the most famous caves on the island, is a stunning geological formation offering a window onto the Río Grande de Arecibo valley. Visitors can hike up to the cave’s mouth with a trained biologist who will be able to teach them all about flora and fauna in the area.

In Utuado, in the mountainous central region of Puerto Rico, your clients can explore the shimmering blue waters and towering rocks of Cañon de Tanamá. Tour operators run caving expeditions, tubing tours in which they’ll float along rivers into enormous caverns, and rock-climbing activities.

 4. Go hiking in the rainforest

If your clients are into walking, they’ll love a vacation in Puerto Rico. From its coastal trails to the interior’s mountains, there’s some exceptional trekking to be done here. Puerto Rico is home to the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, El Yunque, where impressive waterfalls thunder into freshwater pools and parrots squawk in the treetops above.

Elsewhere, Guánica’s State Forest has coastal trails that lead to some delightfully secluded, shimmering sands.
