Rotterdam is celebrated for its impressive street art, boasting eight kilometers of colorful and ever-changing surfaces, the first outdoor Street Art Museum in the world, and plenty of world-class public sculpture.
The Luchtsingel and Hofbogen are two areas where huge facades are adorned with truly extraordinary paintings by international and local artists to create a massive living street art museum, pleasing locals and tourists alike.
The vibrant street art has crept away from the roadside too, with even more to discover on the walls of amazing restaurants, on free art tours, and even via an innovative street art smartphone app.
Here are some of the many ways to enjoy the street art of Rotterdam:
Rewriters - The best way to discover the vibrant art-covered eight-kilometre route past 36 wall paintings is with an app called Rewriters Rotterdam. The app is available on Android and IOS and offers a useful map with an ideal walking route past unique artworks of varied styles and sizes. With the app, street art enthusiasts get a behind-the-scenes insight into the history of the walls too, with images and information about past paintings documented and archived.
Art Evening (Kunstavond) - Every Friday evening, from 6-9pm Rotterdam’s Art Quarter comes alive with a free art evening.
